We are kind of like the photo I’ve chosen for this page. Each rock and pebble balances delicately on each level of the foundation of this structure. It is perfect with all of its imperfections, as we are.

Mother Nature, as in life, has a way of shaking things up sometimes though.

Something small might just ‘shift’ things a bit which could cause any of the smaller pebbles to topple over or become misplaced, sometimes even fall off. The foundation is strong and secure, the pebbles can be placed back where they were, or sometimes in a better spot so they won’t fall or topple over again, and the structure whole once again. It might look the same, but it’s stronger and built with fortitude.

On the other end of the spectrum, a catastrophic event causing damage and destruction might have us rebuilding or re-stacking the stones and pebbles creating a whole new structure and if the foundation is damaged, then we would have to build a new one.

We are kind of like this too. We are faced with experiences, events, and challenges, that can have a significant impact on us no matter what our circumstances or where we are in life. How it happens is always a surprise. It might be something seemingly small and insignificant but has given us pause to reshape ourselves. It could also be something so huge that it has shaken us to our core and we don’t see a way to come back to who we were before. And sometimes, we just feel mis-placed or out of sorts without really understanding why. This is life.

I recently went through a life changing experience when my son passed away. It has taken time to recover, and I find that I am ‘getting comfortable’ with the new version of me. I am changed.

Work/career, activities of daily life, finances, taking care of the kids, finding time to have a social life, health, exercise, relationships, etc.; this is all part of daily living. And then there are the thoughts, emotions, and feelings that go with ALL of that.

Having to rebuild or strengthen our own foundation is not easy. Finding ways to balance everything in our lives can be overwhelming, in and of itself, and we ‘lose’ ourselves in the midst of Life and how we are moving through it.

So, when do you find time to start taking care of you? How are you going to do this? Sometimes taking a vacation or having a spa day helps; it takes the edge off. Then you go back to daily living, and it seems like the vacation or spa day wasn’t really the answer. ‘Taking a break’ doesn’t help with balancing your daily life.

You are the foundation of your life. Sometimes, in trying to get back in balance with everything, seeking guidance can help you get back on the right track. This will allow you to deal with daily life in a different way. We can correlate this to planning a road-trip. How much time are you investing? What is your destination? What stops will you be making along the way? Will you be making time for yourself to enjoy this road-trip you are planning and are you looking forward to the amazing things you will see along the way?

Finding ways to improve physical health, letting go of what no longer serves you and finding what does, being mindful in how you communicate with yourself and others, quieting the mind, and balancing emotions can help you to see more clearly what you need to do to create a lifestyle that is working for you.
